I have this problem too with 8.1 I have a fairly new Lenovo Y500 and I began experiencing a lot of different problems a few weeks ago. One of them was a random beep which usually occurred when I wasn't doing anything at all.
The other problems were severe enough that I ended up replacing the hard drive and re-installing 8.1. I have only re-installed a few programs to date and yesterday the random beep started again. I listened to the Windows Sounds and it's the "default beep". It happened two or three times yesterday and so far today it's happened twice. I'm usually not doing anything at the moment that it occurs. I always have a wireless mouse and keyboard connected and I always have my headset connected, as well as my external monitor. So there are no new peripherals, and no software that I didn't have when everything was fine. Does anyone have any idea of what's causing this? Thank you.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply.
It is highly recommended to check for the hard ware there is a different meaning for a different beep and please check your computer manufacturer and check if there is a problem with your hardware, just to be on a safe side.
Please refer to the below link for Lenovo support:

Alternatively you can also update the chipset and BIOS updates available for your particular model number and check if it helps.
BIOS Disclaimer:
Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. I went to Sounds and played them until I heard the same one, and it's called "default beep". It happens when I'm not doing anything. Some days, it doesn't do it at all, and sometimes it will do it 2 or 3 times within an hour or so and then doesn't happen again that day. Any ideas?

Hi,
It wasn't happening often enough to allow me to turn off sound for a long period of time, because I work many hour a day, 7 days a week and I need sound. I don't believe it was a hardware beep because I've heard that before. Once I re-installed Windows, the problem disappeared, so it was definitely something corrupt in Windows. Actually, by the time I did the re-install, many things in Windows were corrupted.

I tried that and everything else I could find by suggestion, research, etc. Restore would hang and never complete.......Windows was a mess. I finally made a bootable flash drive, put Windows 8.1 installation on it, used it to go to command prompt and ran several different commands to repair the MBR which allowed me to finally boot into Windows. However, all of the same problems remained, so my only option was to wipe everything out and reinstall Windows. It's been a very frustrating and time consuming ordeal and one that shouldn't have been necessary. I don't load software on my computer, so it shouldn't have been necessary.
All of the problems started in April immediately following a regular Microsoft update which suddenly caused my hibernation Scheduled Task to quit working Working for 3 weeks with Microsoft didn't restore it's functionality. From that point on, little problems started cropping up until it got to the point that I couldn't even boot into Windows. Until that update my system ran smoothly and I had not installed even one new program.
I hope Windows 10 works better than 8 and 8.1, because they have been total disasters.
